Proteins on cell membranes that respond to the molecule adenosine. Alpha Waves

Brainwave patterns oscillating between 8 and 14 Hz, associated with a relaxed but alert mental state. Binaural beats targeting the alpha range are commonly used for relaxation and light meditation. Alpha waves are typically present when you’re calm, daydreaming, or in a meditative state with your eyes closed.

Amplitude

The strength or intensity of a signal — in frequency technology, this typically refers to how powerful the electromagnetic field or electrical current is. Higher amplitude doesn’t always mean better results; microcurrent research shows that ATP production peaks at specific current levels and declines at higher ones.

ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)

The primary energy molecule used by every cell in the body — often called the “energy currency” of the cell. ATP powers virtually every cellular process, from muscle contraction to nerve signaling. The foundational 1982 Cheng study showed that microcurrent stimulation can increase ATP production by up to 500%, providing a key mechanism for how microcurrent technology may support wellness.

Beta Waves

Brainwave patterns oscillating between 14 and 30 Hz, associated with active thinking, focus, and concentration. Binaural beats targeting the beta range are used for alertness and cognitive performance.

Binaural Beats

An auditory phenomenon that occurs when two slightly different tones are played simultaneously — one in each ear through headphones. The brain perceives a third tone at the difference between the two frequencies. For example, a 200 Hz tone in one ear and a 210 Hz tone in the other creates a perceived 10 Hz binaural beat (in the alpha range). Research suggests binaural beats may support relaxation, anxiety reduction, and focus, though the evidence is still developing.

Bioresonance

A concept proposing that the body’s cells and organs emit specific electromagnetic frequencies, and that these can be detected and corrected using electronic devices. Used in some frequency devices (including certain Healy features) for “resonance analysis.” Bioresonance lacks a validated scientific mechanism and is not recognized in mainstream medicine or physics.

The Science Behind Frequency Technology

CES (Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation)

A specific application of microcurrent that delivers low-level electrical current through the brain via ear clips or forehead electrodes. CES devices like the Alpha-Stim have received FDA clearance for anxiety, insomnia, depression, and pain — making CES one of the more evidence-supported branches of microcurrent technology.

Contact Mode

A delivery method where the frequency device makes direct physical contact with the body through electrode pads, hand-held cylinders, wrist straps, or foot plates. Contact mode is the most straightforward and scientifically plausible way to deliver electromagnetic frequencies or electrical currents to the body.

Cytochrome C Oxidase

A photoreceptor enzyme within the mitochondria that absorbs light photons during photobiomodulation (red light therapy). When cytochrome c oxidase absorbs red or near-infrared light, it triggers increased ATP production and other cellular responses. This is the primary established mechanism behind photobiomodulation.

Delta Waves

The slowest brainwave patterns, oscillating between 1 and 4 Hz, associated with deep sleep and unconscious processes. PEMF devices and binaural beats targeting delta frequencies are used to support deep sleep.

Dwell Time

In Rife and frequency generator terminology, the amount of time a device stays on a single frequency before moving to the next one in a program. Dwell times can range from seconds to minutes depending on the protocol.

Electromagnetic Field (EMF)

A field of energy produced by electrically charged objects. All frequency devices work by generating some form of electromagnetic field — whether through direct electrical current (microcurrent, TENS), pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF), radio waves (Rife), or light (photobiomodulation). The term “EMF” is also used colloquially to refer to potentially harmful electromagnetic radiation from electronics, which is a different context from therapeutic EMF devices.

Electromagnetic Spectrum

The full range of electromagnetic radiation, from extremely low frequency radio waves through microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays. Consumer frequency devices operate at the low end of this spectrum (radio waves and below), except for photobiomodulation, which uses visible red and near-infrared light.

Entrainment

The process by which an external rhythm or frequency influences the body’s own rhythmic patterns. In binaural beats, the concept is that the brain’s electrical activity “entrains” to match the frequency of the perceived beat. In PEMF, some researchers propose that cellular oscillations can entrain to the pulsed electromagnetic field.

FDA-Cleared

A regulatory designation meaning a device has been reviewed through the FDA’s 510(k) pathway and found to be substantially equivalent to an existing cleared device. FDA clearance is a lower bar than FDA approval — it doesn’t require clinical trials proving effectiveness. Most consumer frequency devices that reference the FDA have been cleared (not approved) for specific uses like pain management.

FDA-Approved

A regulatory designation meaning a device has undergone the more rigorous Premarket Approval (PMA) process, which requires clinical trial evidence of safety and effectiveness. FDA approval is a higher standard than FDA clearance. PEMF for bone recovery in non-union fractures has received this level of regulatory backing.

Frequency

The number of times a wave or pulse repeats per second, measured in Hertz (Hz). One Hz equals one cycle per second. Different frequency ranges are associated with different applications — 1–4 Hz targets delta brainwaves (deep sleep), 7.83 Hz is the Schumann resonance (Earth’s natural frequency), and higher frequencies in the kHz and MHz range are used in Rife devices.

FSM (Frequency-Specific Microcurrent)

A clinical microcurrent approach developed by Dr. Carolyn McMakin that uses pairs of specific frequencies delivered simultaneously on two channels — one targeting a proposed condition, the other targeting a proposed tissue type. FSM has published research showing benefits for muscle soreness and low back pain, and is primarily used by trained practitioners in clinical settings.

What Is Microcurrent?

Gauss

A unit of measurement for magnetic field strength. Consumer PEMF devices typically operate between 0.5 and 100 Gauss. For reference, the Earth’s magnetic field is approximately 0.25–0.65 Gauss. BEMER operates at 0.035–0.35 Gauss (very low); some clinical PEMF devices operate at several hundred Gauss.

Healy

A portable microcurrent device made by Healy World (Germany) that delivers Individualized Microcurrent Frequency (IMF) programs through electrode pads or a coil accessory. FDA-cleared as a Class II device for temporary pain relief. Offers hundreds of wellness programs through a smartphone app. Distributed through an MLM model. Price range: $506–$4,041.

Hertz (Hz)

The standard unit of frequency — one Hertz equals one cycle (or pulse) per second. Kilohertz (kHz) = 1,000 Hz. Megahertz (MHz) = 1,000,000 Hz. Most PEMF devices operate in the 1–50 Hz range. Rife machines can operate up to several MHz. Sound frequencies audible to humans range from about 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

IMF (Individualized Microcurrent Frequency)

The specific microcurrent approach used by the Healy device. IMF programs deliver customized frequency patterns through electrode pads or a coil, selected via a smartphone app. The “individualized” aspect comes from the resonance analysis feature, which claims to scan the user’s bioenergetic field to recommend programs — a feature that lacks scientific validation.

Information Field

A concept used by Healy and TimeWaver systems proposing that a non-physical field of information underlies biological processes, and that electronic devices can read and influence this field. The information field is not a recognized concept in mainstream physics or biology. Healy’s own disclaimers note that information field technology is not recognized by conventional medicine.

Intensity

The strength of a frequency device’s output, measured differently depending on the technology — in Gauss or Tesla for PEMF devices, in microamps (μA) for microcurrent, or in milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²) for red light panels. More intensity is not always better; optimal ranges vary by application.

Irradiance

A measure of light power delivered per unit area, typically expressed in milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²). In photobiomodulation, irradiance determines how much therapeutic light energy reaches the target tissue. Higher-irradiance panels deliver more energy per session, potentially reducing treatment time.

LLLT (Low-Level Light Therapy)

An older term for what is now more commonly called photobiomodulation (PBM). LLLT specifically refers to the use of low-power lasers or LEDs to stimulate cellular function. The term fell out of favor because “low-level” was ambiguous and the therapy works with LEDs as well as lasers.

M – P

Membrane Potential

The electrical voltage difference across a cell’s membrane, typically around -70 to -90 millivolts in healthy cells. PEMF and microcurrent technologies are theorized to support cellular function by influencing membrane potential — helping cells maintain their optimal electrical charge.

Microcirculation

Blood flow through the body’s smallest blood vessels — capillaries, arterioles, and venules. BEMER markets its PEMF device specifically as a microcirculation support tool. Microcirculation is essential for oxygen delivery, nutrient transport, and waste removal at the cellular level.

Microcurrent

Electrical stimulation delivered in the microampere (μA) range — typically 10–600 μA. This is roughly 1,000 times weaker than TENS and below the threshold of conscious sensation. Microcurrent research shows it can increase cellular ATP production by up to 500% at optimal levels (Cheng 1982).

Milliamp (mA)

A unit of electrical current equal to one-thousandth of an ampere. TENS devices operate in the milliamp range (1–80 mA), which is strong enough to stimulate sensory nerves and produce a perceptible tingling sensation.

Mitochondria

Structures inside cells often called the “powerhouses” — they produce ATP, the cell’s primary energy molecule. Both microcurrent and photobiomodulation are theorized to influence mitochondrial function: microcurrent by creating proton gradients that drive ATP synthesis, and red light by activating cytochrome c oxidase within the mitochondrial electron transport chain.

MLM (Multi-Level Marketing)

A distribution model where independent distributors sell products and earn commissions on both their own sales and the sales of distributors they recruit. Both Healy and BEMER use MLM distribution, which impacts pricing (adding 30–50% or more overhead) and review objectivity (many reviewers earn commissions on sales).

MOR (Mortal Oscillatory Rate)

Royal Raymond Rife’s proposed concept that every microorganism has a specific electromagnetic frequency that can destroy it — analogous to a specific musical pitch shattering a glass. The MOR concept has never been validated through controlled clinical trials and is not accepted in mainstream science.

What Is a Rife Machine?

Nanometer (nm)

A unit of length equal to one-billionth of a meter, used to measure light wavelengths. In photobiomodulation, the most commonly studied wavelengths are 660 nm (red light) and 850 nm (near-infrared). These specific wavelengths are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase, triggering cellular responses.

Near-Infrared (NIR)

Light in the 700–1,000 nm wavelength range — invisible to the human eye but able to penetrate deeper into tissue than visible red light. Near-infrared light at 850 nm is one of the two primary wavelengths used in photobiomodulation panels.

PBM (Photobiomodulation)

The use of specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular processes. PBM works by delivering light photons to cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria, increasing ATP production and triggering anti-inflammatory and tissue-supporting responses. A 2025 expert consensus confirmed PBM is safe for adult use and does not induce DNA damage.

PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field)

A technology that generates brief, low-frequency electromagnetic pulses that pass through body tissue. PEMF has the strongest evidence base of any consumer frequency technology, with FDA approval for bone recovery since 1979. Devices range from full-body mats to portable applicators.

Piezoelectricity

The phenomenon where certain materials (including bone tissue) generate electrical signals in response to mechanical stress. The discovery of piezoelectricity in bone in the 1950s–60s laid the groundwork for using external electromagnetic fields (PEMF) to support bone recovery.

Placebo Effect

A measurable improvement in health or behavior not attributable to a treatment itself but to the person’s belief or expectation that the treatment will work. The placebo effect is real, powerful, and well-documented. It’s an important factor to consider when evaluating subjective reports about frequency devices, particularly for technologies with limited controlled research.

Plasma Mode

A Rife machine delivery method where frequencies are broadcast through a gas-filled tube (typically argon, helium, or xenon) that glows when energized. The user sits near the tube. This was closest to Rife’s original approach but has limited evidence for biological effects at consumer power levels.

Q – T

Quantum Entanglement

A real phenomenon in quantum physics where two particles become linked so that measuring one instantly affects the other, regardless of distance. Some Rife devices (particularly Spooky2’s remote mode) claim to use quantum entanglement to deliver frequencies through biological samples. However, quantum entanglement operates at the subatomic particle level and has never been demonstrated as a mechanism for transmitting therapeutic frequencies to a human body.

Radionics

A pseudoscientific practice proposed by Albert Abrams in the early 1900s, claiming that diseases emit specific electromagnetic frequencies that can be detected and corrected electronically. Rife machines are historically classified as a subset of radionics devices. The practice has been investigated and found unsupported by mainstream science.

Red Light Therapy

A common name for photobiomodulation using red (typically 660 nm) and near-infrared (typically 850 nm) light. Delivered through panels, wands, or masks, red light therapy has a growing evidence base for skin health, muscle recovery, joint comfort, and wound support.

Remote Mode

A delivery method offered by some Rife machines (notably Spooky2) where frequencies are transmitted to a person through a biological sample (fingernail, hair) without physical proximity. The proposed mechanism references quantum entanglement. Remote mode has no support in established physics at the energy levels involved.

Resonance

The phenomenon where a system vibrates with greater amplitude at specific frequencies. In music, resonance causes a glass to shatter when a specific pitch is sustained. Rife’s theory applied this concept to microorganisms, proposing that each one has a resonant frequency that could destroy it. In frequency wellness more broadly, “resonance” is often used loosely to describe the interaction between external frequencies and biological systems.

Rife Machine

An electronic device that generates specific electromagnetic frequencies, based on the theories of Royal Raymond Rife (1888–1971). Modern Rife machines include large frequency databases and multiple delivery modes. No Rife machine has been FDA-approved for any medical condition.

What Is a Rife Machine?

Schumann Resonance

The fundamental resonant frequency of the Earth’s electromagnetic field, approximately 7.83 Hz. Some PEMF practitioners consider this a particularly important frequency for human wellness, based on the theory that human biology evolved in the presence of this natural electromagnetic signal. Some PEMF devices include 7.83 Hz as a specific frequency option.

Solfeggio Frequencies

A set of ancient musical tones (174 Hz, 285 Hz, 396 Hz, 417 Hz, 528 Hz, 639 Hz, 741 Hz, 852 Hz, 963 Hz) that proponents associate with various emotional, spiritual, and physical benefits. Solfeggio frequencies are widely available as free audio tracks. Scientific evidence for their specific claimed effects is limited, though the relaxation benefits of sustained tonal listening are supported by broader music therapy research.

The most popular consumer Rife machine system. Open-source software with 50,000+ frequency programs, modular hardware starting at ~$100 per generator, and a community of 41,000+ users. Supports contact, remote, plasma, cold laser, and PEMF delivery modes.

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)

A technology that delivers low-voltage electrical currents through electrode pads on the skin to stimulate nerves for pain management. TENS operates in the milliamp range (much stronger than microcurrent) and is FDA-cleared for pain relief. A meta-analysis of 381 studies found moderate-certainty evidence that TENS reduces pain intensity. TENS units are available without prescription for $30–$80.

Tesla (T)

The SI unit of magnetic flux density (magnetic field strength). One Tesla = 10,000 Gauss. Consumer PEMF devices operate in the microtesla (μT) range — millionths of a Tesla. For comparison, an MRI machine operates at 1.5–3 Tesla.

Theta Waves

Brainwave patterns oscillating between 4 and 8 Hz, associated with deep meditation, creativity, and the boundary between waking and sleeping. Binaural beats and low-frequency PEMF targeting the theta range are used for meditation enhancement and relaxation.

U – Z

Vasomotion

The rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the body’s smallest blood vessels (arterioles), which drives microcirculation. BEMER specifically markets its PEMF technology as supporting vasomotion. The concept is legitimate in physiology, though whether BEMER’s specific signal uniquely supports it (versus other PEMF signals) has not been established through head-to-head studies.

Waveform

The shape of an electromagnetic pulse or electrical signal. Common waveforms in frequency devices include sine wave (smooth, rounded curves), square wave (sharp on/off transitions), and sawtooth wave (gradual rise with sharp drop, containing a broad spectrum of harmonics). Different waveforms deliver energy differently, and some PEMF researchers believe sawtooth waves may be more effective for certain applications due to their broader frequency content.

Wavelength

The distance between consecutive peaks of a wave, typically measured in nanometers (nm) for light. In photobiomodulation, wavelength determines how deeply light penetrates tissue and which cellular structures absorb it. Red light (660 nm) is absorbed near the skin surface; near-infrared (850 nm) penetrates deeper into muscle and joint tissue.

510(k)

The FDA’s premarket notification process for medical devices. A 510(k) submission demonstrates that a new device is “substantially equivalent” to an existing legally marketed device. Most consumer frequency devices that reference the FDA have gone through this pathway. 510(k) clearance does not require clinical trials — it’s a lower bar than Premarket Approval (PMA).
